How the score works

A score out of 100, in five words, with the reasons

Every food gets a score out of 100 and one of five words, from Everyday (85 to 100) to Rarely (0 to 29). The word is always written out and the reasons come with it. No letter grades and no red crosses: the score describes the food, not you.

  • Everyday
  • Most days
  • Sometimes
  • Once in a while
  • Rarely

What it looks at

A food’s overall nutrition per 100 g, with extra weight on fiber, free and added sugar, and whole grains. The base is a published nutrient-profiling method, and every change we made to it is documented.

What it leaves out

No glycemic-index numbers and no “hormone” or “inflammation” scores: the evidence doesn’t support them, and for GI there is no openly licensed data either. Additives count only when an official body has flagged them. We explain why.

Same food, same answer

The word comes from fixed rules, not from an AI guess, so the same food with the same data always gets the same word. When data is missing, we say so instead of guessing.

Check any food

Search everyday foods and packaged products, scan a barcode, or take a photo of your plate. You see the word, the top reasons, the nutrients per portion and where the data came from. Photo results are estimates you can correct.

Track what matters to you

Log meals in seconds and see your calories, protein, fiber and added sugar for the day at a glance, each against a target set for you.

Plan your week

Get a weekly meal plan built from USDA MyPlate Kitchen recipes and simple no-cook meals, filtered by your diet and allergies. Swap any meal in a tap and get a shopping list that merges ingredients across recipes.

Log your cycle and symptoms

A quick daily check-in for your period, symptoms, mood and energy, with a month view. No predictions and no “late” alerts. Add reminders you set yourself.

Bring it to your appointments

Create a report with your eating averages and your cycle and symptom notes, ready to share with your doctor or dietitian.

Not centered on weight

You don’t have to lose weight to eat well with PCOS. You pick your goal (lose, maintain or gain weight) and can switch any time; food scores never depend on it.

What the PCOS guideline says

“There are benefits to a healthy lifestyle even in the absence of weight loss.”

2023 International Evidence-based Guideline for PCOS, practice point 3.1.5 (Teede et al., 2023)

No single diet has been shown to be best for PCOS. The guideline recommends healthy eating in line with general guidance, tailored to your own preferences and goals. That’s what Chickpea is built to help with: healthy eating, as part of a healthy lifestyle, may help you live well with PCOS (PMOS).

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Chickpea medical advice?

No. Chickpea gives general information about food and nutrition. It doesn’t diagnose or treat PCOS (PMOS) or any other condition, and it doesn’t replace your doctor or a registered dietitian. Talk to them before you change your diet, especially if you’re pregnant, take medication such as metformin, or have ever had an eating disorder. Read the full medical disclaimer.

Where does the food data come from?

Nutrient values for everyday foods come from USDA FoodData Central. Packaged products come from Open Food Facts (© Open Food Facts contributors, under the Open Database License) and USDA FoodData Central. The recipes in your meal plans come from USDA MyPlate Kitchen. When you log a meal from a photo, an AI model identifies the foods and estimates the amounts, and you can correct them before you save. Every source and license is on our sources page.

Do I need to lose weight?

No. The 2023 International PCOS Guideline says there are benefits to a healthy lifestyle even in the absence of weight loss. Chickpea doesn’t assume you want to lose weight: you choose your goal (lose, maintain or gain weight), your targets follow it, and you can switch any time.

How do I cancel?

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Chickpea and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before your trial or current period ends to avoid the next charge. Deleting the app or your account doesn’t cancel the subscription. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What does PMOS mean?

PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. It’s the new name for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), agreed through a global consensus process published in The Lancet in May 2026. Both names refer to the same condition. The new name is being introduced over a transition period of about three years, so we use both: PCOS (PMOS).

Is there a free version?

The app needs a subscription after the free trial: 7 days free on the yearly plan, then $59.99 a year, or $9.99 a month without a trial. Everything on this website is free to read, including how we score foods and where our data comes from.

Does Chickpea show glycemic index (GI) numbers?

No. We found no openly licensed, reliable GI dataset we could use, and the evidence for low-GI diets in PCOS is limited: about ten small trials with roughly 400 women in total and high dropout. Instead, the score looks at things that can be read from a food’s own data: whole grains, fiber compared with carbohydrate, and free sugars. Why we leave GI out.

What happens to my health data?

Your food logs and your cycle and symptom entries are used to run the app for you. We don’t sell them, we don’t use them for advertising, and the app contains no advertising or tracking SDKs. You can delete your account and all your data in the app at any time. See our privacy policy and our consumer health data privacy policy.
